Faith-Rooted News & Resources: the RECLAIM Act
June 2019 Action Alert
Great news! The Natural Resources Committee in the US House of Representatives recently passed bipartisan legislation to clean up sites polluted by coal mining and create new economic opportunities for the communities that have been impacted by them. The bipartisan legislation accelerates the distribution of $1 billion in already-collected fees for projects that clean up abandoned coal mines, and waters polluted by them, and lays a foundation for economic development and diversification in impacted regions.
Now, we call on people of faith and conscience for support. Urge your member of Congress to cosponsor the RECLAIM Act so the bill can be brought to the floor of the House for a vote as soon as possible.
Call 202-224-3121 to reach your US Representative, and post to social media at #RECLAIMAct.

The map shown below represents the distribution of remaining pre-1977 abandoned coal mines in the United States by county. The darker the red, the greater the extent of still-existing abandoned mines. These are the sites that would be eligible under the RECLAIM Act. You can visit the map to zoom into your area.
